Oiseau de mer des Lacs de Limagne (Miocène)
Au Miocène le bassin d’effondrement de la Limagne abrite de grands lacs peu profonds autour desquels se développe, sous un climat plus chaud qu’aujourd’hui, une multitude d’espèces d’oiseaux. Dans ces espaces lacustres, on trouvait des espèces arboricoles et terrestres (hiboux, pics, perroquets, martinets, faisans…) et bien entendu des espèces aquatiques : cormorans, pélicans, plongeons, canards, flamants… Mais, chose peut-être plus inattendue, ces grands lacs accueillaient également des oiseaux de mer comme ce jeune, appartenant peut-être à la famille des Procellariidae. Mort prématurément, le corps de celui-ci fut disloqué dans les eaux et cet humérus vint se déposer entre des stromatolites où, recouvert par les dépôts lacustres, il fut préservé pendant plus de vingt millions d’années.
