Dent de Nanotyrannus américain

Le Nanotyrannus ("Tyran nain") est le plus petit représentant de la famille des Tyrannosauridés qui vécut en Amérique du Nord à la fin du Crétacé. On estime que ce prédateur aurait pu faire un peu plus de 5m de long et peser aux environ de 500 kg. Sa morphologie est identique à celle du T-Rex, à tel point que certains paléontologues comme Jack Horner soutiennent qu’il ne s’agit pas d’une espèce à part, mais tout simplement de T-Rex juvéniles.
Cette pointe de dent a été découverte dans le Wyoming (USA), au sein de la Lance Formation. Cette formation comporte des restes de faune (généralement la même qu’à Hell Creek) vivant sur l’île ouest-américaine qui ont été entrainés par les cours d’eau jusqu’à la plaine côtière où ils se sont fossilisés.
