Ces empreintes d’une salamandre primitive, Anthichnium salamandroïdes, date du Permien inférieur soit il y a environ 299/282 millions d’années. L’argile sableuse encore humide sur laquelle a marché l’animal s’est progressivement fossilisée en grès rouges, les « ruffes », colorés par des oxydes de fer. L’apparition des grès rouges, qui succèdent aux grès gris, témoigne d’un certain réchauffement climatique à cette époque. L’étude des sédiments plaide en faveur d’un climat chaud, de type intertropical, alternant des saisons sèches et des saisons des pluies. Les zones qui restaient plus ou moins humides abritaient des fougères arborescentes, des calamites (prêles géantes) et quelques conifères. C’est dans cet environnement qu’évoluaient, entre autres, des espèces de salamandres comme Anthichnium, au milieu d’espèces plus imposantes comme les Eryops ou les Dimétrodons.
