Priscacara et Diplomystus de la Green River (USA) - Eocène

Le gisement de la Green River, à cheval sur le Colorado, l’Utah et le Wyoming (USA) est connu pour ses nombreux fossiles de l’Eocène (48 millions d’années), et tout particulièrement pour ses poissons. La couche la plus fossilifère, dans le Wyoming, couvre environ 4.000 ans de sédimentation. Les deux espèces présentées ici sont parmi les plus courantes du gisement. Priscacara liops est une espèce éteinte proche des perches soleil actuelles. Il avait des dents laissant penser qu’il pouvait se nourrir d’escargots et de crustacés, on le reconnait facilement grâce à ses grandes épines sur les nageoires anales et dorsales. Diplomystus dentatus quant à lui est une espèce éteinte proche des harengs. Il se caractérise par une bouche retournée qui semble indiquer que ce poisson vivait plutôt en surface. Outre cette bouche particulière, il est reconnaissable par son large aileron anal, son aileron dorsal réduit et sa queue très fourchue. On sait que Diplomystus pouvait manger d’autres poissons, comme les Knightia que l’on a parfois retrouvés dans son ventre.
